Some Favorite SF/F Novels That Were Read Over The Pandemic
...Because, hey, reviews are fun! And reprinting some of those is way easier than writing a new newsletter, right?
Recently, I’ve posted a glowing long review of John Feffer’s Splinterlands Trilogy (2016/2018/2021) as well as a bullet review of the hidden classic, Michaelmas (1977) by Algis Budrys. Definitely, rock those.
But, why stop there? So, for anyone lining up some genre fiction readings, I’d like to also recommend the following (all reviews I wrote during the height of the pandemic):
Her Fearful Symmetry (2009) by Audrey Niffenegger - A (legit) ghost story was the sophomore effort from the author of the instant classic “The Time-Traveler’s Wife”. 5 stars. Full Review Here.
Under Heaven (2010) by Guy Gavriel Kay - What can you say? Kay is the only fantasy author I’ve encountered with prose as smooth as LeGuin’s. 5 stars. Full Review Here.
Eight God Engine (2020) by O. Josephs - This urban fantasy’s plot is a dark firehose of originality; making it precisely the sort of self-published gem for which I’m always on the hunt. 4 stars. Full Review Here.
and, finally, Near-Life Experience (2021) by Emma G. Rose. A fun (YA, I would say), and also self-published, tale of death and his pet hero—as both have a really bad day. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Emma. We spoke about mental health tropes (especially with regards to schizophrenics) in genre fiction [ for the record, right before we recorded, Emma surprised me with a pretty short time limit on our interview…so my reaction was to talk faster! :-) ]. 4 stars. Full Review Here.
